Ordination of Bishop Flores a 'historic moment'

Detroit – Calling the occasion "historic," Cardinal Adam Maida ordained Bishop Daniel E. Flores as Detroit's newest auxiliary bishop Nov. 29.
"This is a great and historic moment for our Church of Detroit, and especially for the ever-growing Hispanic population of Michigan," Cardinal Maida said in his homily. Bishop Flores, 45, became not only Michigan's first Hispanic bishop, but also the youngest bishop in the United States.

At Giovanni's Ristorante in southwest Detroit — known commonly as a hidden gem of fine dining in the city — the turkeys are being prepared to feed hundreds of needy and homeless in the city.

Detroit — About 700 people filled St. Margaret of Scotland Church in St. Clair Shores last Sunday to celebrate the parish's 50th anniversary.Retired Auxiliary Bishop Walter J. Each year parishes and Catholic social service agencies submit the stories of families struggling to make ends meet.  And generous individuals and parishes donate funds, 100% of which are distributed to the families.  While many families receive gifts of clothing or toys from a parish giving tree, they need your help to meet more direct financial needs, such as food, prescription costs, rent and utilities.

While on Nov. 7 Michigan voters agreed with Church leaders on Proposal 5, they disagreed on Proposal 2. A spokesman for The Michigan Catholic Conference says the passing of Proposal 2, which bans certain affirmative action practices, is hard to take because it hurts efforts to curb racial and gender inequality in the state.

This month of November, as we celebrate the Communion of Saints, and as the Church year draws to its conclusion, I thought it appropriate to reflect on the fact that all who are suffering in body or spirit truly have a vocation, a special and unique calling from the Lord, something which builds up the Church.
