Rice Bowl grants help 48 programs in the archdiocese
by Robert Delaney of The Michigan Catholic Published August 22, 2008
Detroit Local Rice Bowl grants have been given to 48 programs in the Archdiocese of Detroit, totaling $25,750. Three-quarters of the money raised through Operation Rice Bowl goes to Catholic Relief Services for use in its worldwide efforts to relieve poverty and hunger. The local grants come out of the one-quarter of all funds raised through local participation in the popular Lenten program that are retained for distribution to programs that combat hunger.
Local grant recipients include many parish food pantries and soup kitchens, as well as programs sponsored by vicariates, groups of parishes and organizations, such as the Society of St. Vincent de Paul.
"Local Rice Bowl grants support organizations that provide an immediate response to emergency needs," said Lory McGlinnen of the archdiocesan Department of Parish Life and Services.
"Layoffs, the mortgage crisis and cutbacks in spending have really hurt the metropolitan Detroit community. People who have financially supported outreach programs such as soup kitchens and food pantries in the past are now having to seek assistance from these same organizations," added McGlinnen, who serves as local coordinator for Rice Bowl.
Operation Rice Bowl, which most people participate in through their parish, involves a cardboard "rice bowl" placed on the dining table. Family members are encouraged to make daily contributions to aid the work of CRS and share with impoverished people locally and around the world.
Adding to the money in the rice bowl every day is a popular form of Lenten sacrifice for many families, and there are also devotional materials that accompany the program.
