Prayer Theme: We gather faithfully to worship the Lord
Adam Cardinal Maida
During this month of July, as I continue to reflect on our 175-year history as a diocese, I would like to express our gratitude for the faithful and generous service of generations of priests, religious, deacons, and lay faithful who have made Detroit well-known for its outstanding commitment to a high quality of liturgical celebrations.

Eight priests achieve senior priest status
After lifetimes of service as priests for the Archdiocese of Detroit, eight priests have attained senior priest status. For decades, they have celebrated baptisms, marriages and funeral liturgies. They have prayed with and for us, given us our first communion and heard our confessions. When we've been sick, they have anointed us. When we needed someone to help us, they have listened and helped guide us.

The Year of St. Paul: A look at Paul's converison
Fr. Richard J. Cassidy
Pope Benedict XVI has proclaimed that throughout the entire Church, a Year of St. Paul be celebrated June 29, 2008, through June 29, 2009. The reason for selecting June 29 is that this date marks the Feast of Sts. Peter and Paul.

What do you do when you find life burdensome?
Fr. Richard C. Macey
The second half of the Book of Zechariah, chapters 9-14, differs from the first half. It is often called Deutero-Zechariah, meaning "second Zechariah." There are two poetic oracles in 9:1 and 12:1. There are also many links to other biblical passages in the second half of the work. A variety of different dates of composition have been proposed for what appears to be a collection of writings.

How will you live out and proclaim the message of the Gospel?
Fr. Richard C. Masey
The prophets used visual images as symbolic of their message. In the earlier verses, Jeremiah was told by God to "go out toward the Valley of Ben-hinnom (Gehenna), at the entrance of the Potsherd Gate" (Jeremiah 19:2). He smashed an earthenware jar and told the people that their city would suffer a similar fate as the jar, because of their infidelity to God. "They have built high places for Baal to immolate their sons in fire as holocausts to Baal" (19:5). A priest had the prophet scourged and placed in stocks, a public place of punishment.
