Youth Ministry Programs

Encuentro - Hispanic Ministry to Youth

The First National Encounter for Hispanic Youth and Young Adult Ministry is a national process designed by La Red, an apostolate whose focus is ministry to Hispanic youth and young adults.  Usually referred to as the "Encuentro," the process has three areas of concentration:
  • Evangelization
The process is designed to deepen and strengthen the participants' commitment to and understanding of Catholic Christianity.
  • Missionary Action
The Encuentro seeks to form young people as missionaries for Christ and the Church.
  • Information Gathering
The process includes questions designed to gather information which will be used in forging a Pastoral Plan for Ministry to Hispanic Youth and Young Adults.

National Conferences for Catholic Youth and Youth Ministers

The Archdiocese Office for Youth Ministry coordinates the participation in the National Catholic Youth Conference (NCYC) an exciting, biennial four-day experience of prayer, community, and empowerment for Catholic teenagers and their adult chaperons. The National Catholic Youth Ministry Conference is an opportunity for CYMs to renew themselves with inspiring keynotes, informative workshops, and spirit-filled worship.  This conference is by adults, for adults—strengthening our personal spirituality, professional competence, and the Church's ministry with young people.

World Youth Day, 2008

The Office for Youth Ministry does the planning, and scheduling for the Archdiocesan participation in World Youth Day, 2008, working with all involved agencies and committees to provide multi-faceted program. Resources and gatherings are provided to help prepare young people for a pilgrimage type of experience.  To encourage even greater participation in World Youth Day, the Archdiocese offers multiple opportunities for participation. Traditionally, all participants from the Archdiocese gather for a Mass celebrated by the Archbishop of Detroit.  As in the past, the tradition of a World Youth Day Home experience will continue.

Youth Minister Appreciation Dinner

The Office for Youth Ministry gathers together all those who minister to youth for a special Annual Appreciation Dinner (the first was offered in 2003).  This special-recognition event is a forum for promoting widespread awareness of the very best Youth Ministry initiatives for parishes and vicariates, as well as offering a time to bolster the important recognition of supportive collaboration with the Archdiocese, with the Office for Youth Ministry and with one another.

Two Tracks for Youth Ministry Formation

Recognizing that parishes differ in resources and staffing, the Office for Youth Ministry is now offering two opportunities for Youth Ministry Formation.
  • Youth Ministry Leadership Formation Classes
The first is the series of topics: the Youth Ministry Formation Topics.  These were created for the formation of all those who minister to youth.  This series of topics, combined with the Catechetical Foundational Topics, earns participants Provisional Youth Ministry Certification.  Pastors can send beginning Youth Ministers, or any interested staff member or volunteer, to this initial Formation Series.  This series is beneficial to adult leadership team members. The formation if offered on five Saturdays throughout the year or one week in the summer.

  • Center for Ministry Development National Youth Ministry Training
The second is the more extensive program offered by the Center for Ministry Development.  This additional training for Coordinators of Youth Ministry takes two years to complete and requires a commitment of two full weekend days four times each year plus some follow-up work.  The successful CMD program is geared for the Coordinators of Youth Ministry in Parishes, Campus Ministers in high schools or those who are looking for even more advanced formation opportunities.  The CMD program provides undergraduate and graduate credit or training hours in youth ministry.

National Evangelization Team

To provide new Youth Retreat opportunities for parishes with limited youth ministry and/or resources, the Office for Youth Ministry is arranging for retreat visits from The National Evangelization Team, a Catholic Retreat Ministry provided by specially-trained college-age students who devote either one or two years to the evangelization of our teens.

YouthLeader Advanced Leadership Training for Youth

YouthLeader is designed to give youth in parishes and schools the foundation of leadership skills necessary to build a solid ministry.  Young people and adults learn side by side and will have the confidence and experience necessary to make a big difference at the parish or school.  By investing in YouthLeader, the parish and school can expect to see a level of competence rise within the young people. YouthLeader is a weeklong summer program.  Scholarships are available.

Justice and Peace Institute

The Justice and Peace Institute is a youth formation program for mature high school and college age youth who are interested in social issues.  JPI introduces young people to concepts of peace and justice, Catholic Social Teachings and scriptural teachings on justice.  JPI challenges young people to live out the Gospel call to peace and Justice in their personal life. JPI is a weeklong summer program. Scholarships are available.
